A hotter-than-expected consumer price index on Tuesday sent stocks reeling, with the Dow posting its biggest drop in a year. Stocks bounced back over the next two days, helped by a softer retail sales report , only to slump again on Friday's hot producer price index for January. As we said this week, we're not overly concerned with the hotter-than-expected inflationary readings. Earnings season picks back up for the Club next week, with four holdings set to report quarterly results. William "Bill" Post, the man credited with inventing the iconic toaster pastry Pop-Tarts, has died at 96. Post worked as the plant manager for the Michigan-based Hekman Biscuit Company, later known as Keebler Company, when Kellogg's asked the company to create a new breakfast product. The Pop-Tarts inventor began his career as a part-time worker in high school washing trucks at Hekman. After serving in the Army Air Corps in occupied Japan during World War II, Post returned to the company and worked up the corporate ladder. The toaster pastry remains a favorite among customers 60 years later, with around three billion sold in 2022.

Shares of Uber rose more than 5% on Monday after S&P Dow Jones Indices announced Friday that the ride-hailing company has been selected to join the S&P 500. Analysts at Oppenheimer reiterated their outperform rating on the stock and raised their price target to $75 per share from $65. They said Uber's ticket into the S&P 500 will likely help improve investors' sentiment about returns. Members of the index must have positive earnings in the most recent quarter and over the prior four quarters in total, according to S&P's rules. Uber also has a market cap of about $118 billion, which surpasses the S&P's criteria that companies must have an adjusted market cap of at least $14.5 billion.

Analysts say Uber Technologies' forthcoming ticket into the S & P 500 is a positive catalyst for the stock moving forward. UBER YTD mountain Uber stock. Helfstein said in a report that Uber's entry into the S & P 500 could underpin future stock appreciation by bolstering investor sentiment. "Following the inclusion, we expect UBER to lean into growth and share buybacks, which should increase investor sentiment for growth/return in 2024," Helfstein wrote. "We believe that Uber will transition from 'nice to own' by investors to an 'allocation consideration' now that it is included in the S & P 500."

Uber shares rose 5% in extended trading on Friday after the ride-hailing company was added to the S&P 500 Index, replacing Sealed Air Corp. A company's stock price often rises on news that it's joining the S&P 500 because fund managers who track the benchmark, which gets updated each quarter, have to acquire the shares. Uber shares debuted on the New York Stock Exchange in 2019, but the company was burning cash as it had to pay drivers enough money to stay competitive in a low-margin business. Uber has a market cap of about $118 billion, while the median market cap of companies in the S&P 500 is just over $31 billion. WATCH: Uber into the S&P 500

A gas pump selling E15, a gasoline with 15 percent of ethanol, is seen in Mason City, Iowa, United States, May 18, 2015. The decision underscores concerns within President Joe Biden's administration over fuel prices, as opinion polls show inflation and the economy as key vulnerabilities for his 2024 re-election bid. But the U.S. government restricts sales of E15 gasoline in summer months due to environmental concerns over smog. The ethanol industry for years has pushed to lift the restrictions on E15 sales nationwide, arguing the environmental impacts have been overstated. Oil industry-backed studies showed price increases, while ethanol industry-backed studies showed any price increases offset by utilizing lower-cost ethanol.

Western sanctions on Russian crude following its invasion of Ukraine have upended those plans. Canadian barrels will struggle to compete, analysts and traders said. Chinese oil refiners PetroChina (601857.SS) and Sinopec (600028.SS) have bought and processed Canadian heavy crude in the past. Russia's Urals crude produces higher volumes of fuel and is significantly cheaper than heavy Canadian barrels, said one Calgary-based crude trader. "Today every crude in Asia is having a hard time competing with Russian crude," York said.
